Flood Families at Greater Risk for Eye Infections
As a resident of Dakota Dunes, I want to share some important eye health information to my friends and neighbors.
The residents of flooded homes and areas are at slightly greater risk for serious eye infections when dealing with contaminated fresh water. These types of infections can be more difficult to treat and carry risk of vision loss. In addition, soft contact lens wearers need to be very careful about exposure to the contaminated fresh water and continue to properly clean and disinfect their lenses every day. Below I will highlight a few warnings and suggestions below:
*Any injury to an eye, such as a scratch or foreign material, needs to be seen by an eye care professional with special emphasis on infection risks.
*If you develop a red eye which is not painful, then cool compresses and artificial tears are a good 24 hour treatment option to provide relief. If not showing signs of improvement over 24 hours, please seen an eye care professional.
*Any red eye with pain associated of any level should be seen promptly.
*Soft contact lens wearers are at a higher risk for Acanthamoeba infections when exposed to dirty, contaminated fresh water. Here are good tips to minimize risk: 1) Remove lenses daily, clean and disinfect. 2) Use hydrogen-peroxide cleaning/disinfection systems or Revitalens Multi-purpose. 3) Today, use a fresh contact lens case and discard your old one. 4) Any signs of red eye, remove your contacts and wear your glasses. Then see an eye care professional immediately.
